I've been lucky enough to fish for the past 38 years so I have quite a bit of knowledge.
My preferred choices are normally Lake Nipissing, the French River, the West Arm or Lake Temagami but sometimes there just isn't enough time to get up to those lakes from Toronto. It's unfortunate because at this time of year the ice is at least 12-16 inches and rock solid.
Today, I decided that I needed to post a message because my ice fishing experience on Lake Simcoe was unsettling. This isn't my first time on Lake Simcoe but I was a bit surprised how irresponsible some people were.
Every year before we head out ice fishing with our own equipment, hut and atv, we either call a few ice hut operators or rent with one for the day to see what the ice conditions are like. It's our way of double checking to see if it's safe enough to go out.
On December 31 we rented a hut from a reputable ice fishing operator on Lake Simcoe. The ice thickness ranged from 7 inches to a full 10 inches in some spots and the ice operator was responsible enough to only use snowmobiles to take us out safely to our hut.
So what became so unsettling? I watched full size pickup trucks, vans and cars driving close enough to our rented hut and other huts where folks had painstakingly walked out from shore and felt the ice buckle quite a bit. One full size truck literally drove by slowly right next to our rented hut (2 feet away) and the ice actually bounced up and down and moved. I was very angry and upset that people would be so **** stupid. I decided to call the ice hut operator and requested that we cut the day short. I told them what had happened that made me want to leave earlier and they were really stunned when I said someone had driven their truck so close.
I think people need to respect other anglers that choose not to go on the ice with pickup trucks or cars when it's not safe yet. Anyone with at least basic working knowledge knows the ice conditions and the risks and have enough patience to wait it out until it's okay to fish. You don't need to rush out with your vehicles.
If you want to be stupid and risk your own life, please at the very least, don't drive your vehicle near huts and don't park near folks who have chosen to walk out or drive their small snowmobile or atv. The lakes up north get up to 3 feet of ice but Lake Simcoe will never freeze over completely and never at that level.
So if you don't mind, try to give everyone a fair and safe chance to have a good time, land a few trophies and get off the ice safely. I don't think it's too much to ask a respectable fellow angler. Thanks!
