Best fishing town in Canada? Hastings, Ontario 加拿大的最佳钓鱼城镇? 安大略省的黑厮厅!

HASTINGS, ONT.—Did you hear the one about the 25-pound muskie that jumped up and stole a bass right off the hook? Or the angler who pulled out a Coleman lantern — still glowing? And then there was the lucky striker who hauled in two fish on the same hook.

So the stories go in this friendly little village that is home to 1,200 people and more fish per acre than anywhere else in Ontario. (Or so the locals say though no one knows who counted or how.)

Fact and folklore aside, Hastings is the reel deal, having recently been named Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Town.

In a month-long, online poll by the World Fishing Network, the Trent Hills community 95 minutes northeast of Toronto snagged this year’s title with 89,003 votes, almost double the number of second-place finisher, Port Colborne.

Conveniently situated on the Trent River at the east end of Rice Lake, Hastings is a piscatorial paradise. Just ask William Swinehart, gleefully reeling in a two-pound pickerel just 10 minutes after dropping worm into water.

“And that’s how you do it!” he declares, showing off his trophy on the bridge into town — the only road crossing in the province where fishing is allowed. “This is the only place I know I’m going to catch fish without having to work hard.”

Swinehart, who lives in Ennismore 45 minutes away, has been coming here since 1966. He met his wife on the bridge 36 years ago and one day he’ll have his cremated remains scattered from it.

An inscription on the wall of nearby Lock 18 reads “Bill’s Office,” laughs Swinehart, 58, a maintenance worker and landscaper who goes through 5,000 worms a year pursuing his passion.

With muskie, pickerel, pike, walleye, large and smallmouth bass, catfish, perch, crappie and bluegill in abundance, it's pretty hard not to catch something, boasts the chamber of commerce. But two at a time?

That’s no tall tale, says Artur DaCosta, indicating a goby hanging off the same hook from which he’s just removed a bass. He figures the small fish was lunch for the bigger one.

“It’s OK” that he had to throw the off-season bass back, says DaCosta, a carpenter who drives up from Toronto with his brother Jack. “We come here to pass the time.”

Across the bridge, the cash register’s ringing steadily at The Water Lily, thanks to the shop’s diverse range of goods.

“Coffee, antiques, clothing … and worms,” lists Colin Miller, whose mother Sue opened the store three years ago. She sells 18 big, juicy wrigglers for $4.50 but minnows and leeches are a two-minute drive up the highway.

“It’s just a quaint little town,” she says. “Everything you need is here.”

On the other side of the river, Summer Holmes, 18, is busily scrubbing the dock of the marina where boaters head out toward Peterborough on 60 kilometres of scenic, lock-free water. “We’re always out here cleaning to make sure there’s no seagull poop or goose poop,” she says.

With visitors “from all over, like the Bahamas, Niagara and up the Mississippi,” Holmes says it’s important to offer attractions and amenities befitting the world-class Trent-Severn waterway.

Case in point: the state-of-the-art marina with 64 slips, free Wi-Fi, sparkling clean showers and room for 80-foot yachts.

“And we have the best fireworks in all of Ontario” on Canada Day, says the marina attendant. “It’s just amazing for such a small town.”

But fish are the foundation on which Hastings is built. “This is what makes our town survive,” says Tonya McColl-Smith, who helped mobilize the entire community to promote their village for votes. “We’re totally dependent on fishing.”

A jubilant Hector Macmillan, mayor of Trent Hills, calls the WFN’s official recognition “fabulous news” for Hastings. “I’m very proud of what our citizens have accomplished.”

For folks like campaign organizer and lifelong resident Shannon Preston who never pick up a rod, “you can read a book by the water or have a picnic with the family.”

But when the lure of a fresh, finned dinner becomes too great, there’s a popular hot spot on Front St. E. It’s the Captain’s Table where customers — some driving an hour — line up to get in on a Friday night. And yes, they come for the halibut.

The English-style fish and chips are “better than anyone else’s,” Bill Britton says modestly about the eatery his parents opened 24 years ago. If anglers strike out, “at least they know they can get something here.”
