It is the right time to talk about jerkbait
You still can catch fish through dense cover recently. But I encourage you to start using jerkbait for fall bass. During the early fall time, bass still stay in shallow especially weed flat for chasing bait fish. With streamline body and detailed finish paint, jerkbait mimics the natural forage perfectly. You can fish it aggressively by hard jerking, and also you can fish it gently by sweeping with long pause. Either way that you fish the lure depends on the water temperature and the mood of fish.
lure selection
We can put jerkbait into three categories, floating, suspending, and sinking. In most cases, we use suspending jerkbait often. From 2 feet to 20 feet, the suspending jerkbait can stay at the strike zone longer. The first thing you may consider is the running depth. There are two things determine the running depth of jerbait, factory set-up and line diameter. The factory set-up is printed on the package and it is the nature of the lure that you can not change. The line diameter determines the real time running depth. The thinner the line, the deeper the lure will run. For color selection, you may match the color of natural forage or the color of water.
tackle set up
You may use spinning tackle for small light jerkbait and baitcasting tackle for large heavier jerkbait. The line choice is up to you. But keep it in your mind that the diameter of line will determine the running depth.
How to work it
For its name sake, most time you may jerk it for presentation. The most common mistake people will make is keeping the tight line during the pause. ALWAYS KEEP SLACK LINE DURING PAUSE.
There are three common ways to work jerkbait:
1, jerk or twitch it with rhyme
jerk---jerk---pause, jerk---jerk---pause,
jerk---pause---jerk---jerk---pause,
jerk---jerk---jerk---pause.........
For this method you may create your own fishing melody.
2, pull and stop
When water temperature is really low, you may use this method to trig the bite. Shortly pull the lure for a foot and pause for several seconds. The colder the water , the longer the pause.
3, hardly jerk rarely pause
It is quite similar to walk -the -dog with top water lure. You let the lure dart in the water. The key is always jerk it with semi-slack line.
deal with cover
Do not be afraid to throw jerkbait into the cover. It needs practice. You will keep contact with cover without hang up. Like you work on spinnerbait, when you feel the weed, just crush it by hard ripping.
Well, that is how I work on jerkbait. Wish you have a great fall bassing trip.
