鹅曾在米湖 COTTAGE 度假, 或在 BEWDLEY 岸钓, KAYAK 钓, 曾多次在此当地著名的 RHINO'S ROADHOUSE 馆子里进食. 包括 5 年前全家在米湖度假时, 还有去年十月份 KAYAK 钓时和本论坛钓友大朴, yaoll78 一起吃 BRUNCH (见下面的贴图)
BEWDLEY -- Rhino’s Roadhouse owner, staff, and customers could only watch as fire damaged Bewdley’s beloved restaurant and bar.
The fire call came in just after 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 and when crews arrived smoke was billowing out the front entrance of the popular roadhouse, said Hamilton Township Fire Chief Kelly Serson. Initial reports indicated one person was unaccounted for from an upstairs residence and fire crews were sent in to search the building, said the chief. About an hour later the person was located outside the building and there were no injuries reported in the blaze, he said.
In addition to all three of Hamilton Township fire stations, Port Hope, Cobourg and Alnwick/Haldimand Township were called for mutual aid in the fire. It was too early to pinpoint the cause of the fire as of Monday morning, the chief said.
Owner Dave Austin said he bought Rhino’s Roadhouse in February this year. Mr. Austin joined a group of people who stood outside in the rain watching as fire crews worked on the building. He said the main thing was no one was hurt. There was a family who lived in an upstairs apartment and one cleaner was in Rhino’s when the fire broke out, he said.
He said he has insurance and, although it is early, he hopes to rebuild. “I have to rebuild, I have 26 people who work here,” he said Monday morning.
One of the those staff members, Pam Wigmore, fought back tears as she stood outside. After 20 years working at Rhino’s, she was unsure what she will do next. Rhino’s is a landmark in the area, she said.
“Rhino’s is legendary on Rice Lake,” she said.
Ms. Wigmore said she lives nearby and had worked an evening shift the night before. There was no hint of anything that could have caused the fire when she left last night, she said. Early this morning another staff member knocked on Ms. Wigmore’s door trying to find out how to contact the owner. When she arrived she could see smoke pouring out of the building. The family who had just moved in the upstairs apartment had gotten out but lost everything in the fire, she said.
Previous owner Heather Spence said the building was constructed in the 1870s.
Long-time patrons Tyler Patfield and Maureen Brown also watched as fire crews worked on hot spots and cut a hole in the roof. Windows were broken open and the side of the building badly burnt in the fire.
“I feel very sad -- I feel sad for the girls who worked here,” said Ms. Brown.
Mr. Patfield said he had been coming to Rhino’s since he was a child.
“As a kid we used to come down here and crank up the jukebox,” he said.
Rhino’s is the name people often think of first when they talk about Bewdley or Rice Lake.
“It’s like a wrench in the community heart,” he said. “It feels like a landmark is gone.”
