You are not HOLDING the rod but GRIPPING the rod with your thumb & other fingers.
Such posture will get you carpal-tunnel in time and limit the way you control the rod when casting or fighting fish

Below is the correct way of holding the rod
- All fingers except the thumb should be directly UNDER the rod
- Your thumb should NOT wrap over the rod but lightly rest on top of the rod
